dermaplaning FAQ’s
I’m here to help you with professional advice on the most common FAQ's.
Q. I have noticed light fluffy hairs on my face, especially cheeks? How can you help?
A. This is such a big issue for most women mid life or in peri menopause BUT it is not limited to these years!! Many (what I mean here is most) girls and women have light fluffy vellus hair on their face. It depends on genetics and ethnicity as well as hormones.
Here’s your options:
A physical exfoliation and hair removal using a professional dermablade in a professionally taught manner.
A physical exfoliation and hair removal using sugar.

Q. I have problems with terminal facial hair, Can you still help me? (Terminal is dark and coarse or white without pigment VS fluffy, light hair. People often refer to terminal hair as whiskers)
A. Terminal hair can be treated with either dermaplaning or sugaring & tweezing. In fact many of us have a combination of these two types of hair and both services will help both hair types.
Q. Does Dermaplaning or sugaring hurt?
A. Dermaplaning is very relaxing especially followed up with an ESTHEMAX hydrojelly mask. You can get cozy and sink into a moment of relaxation. The mask will leave your face so fresh and glowy.
Sugaring is not relaxing in the same way. You will feel the tug of the hair being pulled from the root. It is tolerable.
Q. What are the recommended frequencies of each?
A.
Dermaplaning and Sugaring should be performed every 6 to 8 weeks for a consistent fresh look. I recommend for peri or menopausal women to consider 5 to 6 week intervals. For those younger than 40 can do this with every season change or as needed.
If you have a wedding, photographs, a vacation or special occasion, I recommend to come in a week in advance for dermaplaning.
For sugaring I recommend your first facial sugaring NOT be performed before an event. You should come in for a trial run about 2 months before. If your trial run goes smooth without any side effects, then feel free to do your sugaring a week before.
Q. what are the contraindications? (people who should not get these services done)
A.
Accutane is a big one, please book these services 3 months after finishing your accurate treatment.
Inflamed acne, active cold sores, open wounds, skin cancer, pregnancy, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, sunburn are contraindications. If you come in with a sunburn, we will NOT be able to perform your service.
If you are someone who has ever had hives, allergies to make up, or skin sensitivities please come in for a patch test for sugaring. Sometimes our bodies react to facial sugaring with a histamine reaction-like hives. You may even have sugaring on other body parts without issues but the face is different.
**In the case of hives, feeling hot to touch or raised skin, take a Benadryl as soon as possible.
Q. What do I need to know prior to my appointment?
A.
Stop using retinol, vitamin C, harsh acne formulations and exfoliators one week prior to your appointment
Wear sunscreen and stay out of the sun the week ahead
Contact us for a sugaring patch test if you are getting sugaring on the face
Consider taking Valtrex for a few days before and after a lip sugaring
Q. Will these services make my hair grow back thicker or darker?
A. The vellus hair on the face is a different hair type. Dermaplaning and sugaring will not effect its density or color. I have been sugaring my own face for 10 years with no issues. It will slowly eventually grow back and if you choose to never remove it again will not be any different than it would have been otherwise. We do get accustomed to it gone and see how smooth we look in the rear view mirror, how smooth our make up application is so often times we get annoyed when we see it back. I assure you though it will be the same as it would have been without the removal.
