lip blushing FAQ’s
professional advice on the most common questions
Q. I have very little colour or have lost colour hue in my lips
A. This is the number one lip problem as we age. Unfortunately, we loose the vibrant juicy lip colour of our youth as we mature. Generally, some people are not as bright as others depending on genetics and exposures to the elements. It is also common to have darker lips or cool undertones in our lips depending on ethnicity and genetics.
Three things we are able to help you with:
We are able to add vibrancy to your lips through lip blushing.
2. We are able to neutralize your lip color if you have darker lips or cool undertones for a natural/neutral look.
3. We can do both neutralize and add vibrancy.
Q. Am I a good candidate?
A. PMU, permanent make up is not for everyone. We do a thorough pre-screening with all our clients. Once you book your service online, you will receive a video call where we ask you all the pertinent information. Please read through this page on our website to familiarize yourself with the common questions and make any notes of other things you would like to ask. Please make sure your phone number is correct in the booking system and we will text first to arrange the video call. Unfortunately, the video call is essential so make sure to be available for this so your appointment is not delayed or cancelled. See below for questions on contraindications.
Q. I have darkness on my lips, can this be neutralized?
A. Hyperpigmentation can happen for different reasons. This is when there’s discoloration of the skin, lighter or darker. It can be caused by genetics, scars from eczema, acne, psoriasis, or hormonal changes (such as pregnancy). Either way, this is common and we have expertise in colour theory so neutralization OR neutralization and blushing is possible. We can discuss further in your video chat.
Q. Will this hurt?
A. Yes, good old tattooing including PMU can be painful HOWEVER, we use amazing numbing creams before and during your treatments to make you comfortable. Most people tolerate this quite well with the proper procedures in numbing and it is only temporary.
Steps to help you feel the most comfortable include:
No alcohol 24 hours before you arrive
No caffeine 4 hours before you arrive
Take acetaminophen (Tylenol) 1 hour before you arrive
Stay calm, relaxed and breathe
Q. I’d like to make my lips bigger, can this help?
A. YASSS! You know this is NOT a way to make your lips larger because we are limited to your existing natural shape and we are lining your existing vermillion border NOT creating a new one above and beyond your natural one. All that said, I do find that when your natural lips are lined and blushed they appear larger much the same way they would if you carefully applied a nice even coat of lipstick or liner and lipstick. Whether carefully defined tattooing or naturally blushed lip tattooing, they always appear plumper. A coat of gloss and they will pop.
Q. How long does the process take?
A. We need to take care of the technical things once you book an appointment. Expect a video call then follow the guide below for approximate timings.
5 to 10 minutes for a video call. Patch test if desired will be discussed.
Day of service 1.5 to 2.5 hours.
Touch up service in 6 weeks, 1 to 1.5 hours.
*Lip blushing is quicker than neutralization and blushing together.
Yearly touch up is required to keep the look
Q. What is the before and after care?
A. Before Care:
For the 7 days prior: Exfoliate with a facecloth or scrub each night and apply face cream then chapstick or vaseline. Drink lots of water. The more hydrated you are the better your pigment application and retention will look.
24 hours before no alcohol
4 hours before no caffeine
1 hour before take acetaminophen
After Care:
Take advil
Apply cold pack 10 min on/off for an hour
48 hours after no exercise
7 days after no sweating, hot tubs, pools, sauna
For a few days prop head up at night if possible
Warning about smoking and sun:
Not recommended for 2 weeks after. Ladies do as you wish but smoking and sun exposure will affect your pigment longevity :)
Q. are there any contraindications? (people who cannot get this done?)
A. There are contraindications as follows:
If you are pregnant or nursing
If you have had filler or botox within the last 4 weeks
If you are immunocompromised
If you have problems healing from cuts or are susceptible to keloids
If you have has chemical or laser peels in last 2 weeks
If skin disease is present on-site
If you have allergy to pigments/make up
Hemophelia, hepatitis , HIV, healing disorders
If you are on accutane or use steroids on the site
If your skin is easily triggered and gets hyperpigmentation
IMPORTANT if you get cold sores you MUST get a pharmacy/doctors prescription for Valtrex or similar and begin taking a few days in advance as you will most likely get a break out after lip blushing. If you carry the virus but have never has a break out, it is possible this could be a trigger for your skin.
Q. what can I expect for healing/downtime?
A. Clients can expect that there will be moderate swelling, redness and potentially even bruising immediately after and, sometimes lasting, up to 5 days after.
During the initial healing period, there will be minimal scabbing or flaking of the skin. It will almost feel as though you are wearing a dryer up liquid lip stick. If there is scabbing or flaking, do not pick, and allow the scab or dry skin to come off on its own.
Expect the chosen colour to lighten by up to 40% once the healing process is complete.
Color may appear uneven at different stages of healing. Be patient. This is a process that does not yield immediate results. There are unique elements to healing after PMU. Your lips will go through different stages of healing similar to the following:
DAY 1: Swelling, tenderness, high colour intensity
DAY 2: Swelling subsides, dryness starts, colour will look too dark
DAY 3-4: Scabbing and peeling, severe dryness
Day 5-6: More peeling possible, color looks much lighter
Day 7-10: Ghosting stage, color looks very light
DAY 28: The color has settled into its true shade
Q. I have a scar on my lip?
You can tattoo right over them providing they are fully healed. Scars require a little extra attention. They may need 1-2 extra touch ups to get the colour deposited the same as the rest of the lip as scar tissue does not hold pigment as well as healthy skin. Lip tattooing can disguise scars quite well.
